Lou McLaughlin

I first became intrigued with yoga when I bought a book at the age of 24, ‘Teach Yourself Yoga’. I have practiced yoga ever since, give or take the ebbs and flows of life and family, for almost 30 years. My practice has evolved from being quite physically-based to these days being more about overall wellbeing, self-care and acceptance.

Coming across Yin Yoga about 10 years ago, I incorporated it as a ‘stretch’ after my regular practice, but I experienced much more than just stretching! When I completed my training as a yoga teacher and was asked to teach Yin, I wanted to know more so that I could provide an intelligent and authentic experience for participants. I did further training and endless reading on the subject of all things ‘Yin’. My regular practice of this beautiful form of yoga, and also teaching it to others, is deeply nourishing and rewarding. There is so much that extends beyond the time on the mat to so many other facets of life.

As with any group situation, and in the position of trust as a facilitator, incorporating a trauma-informed approach is essential. In my role as a secondary school teacher I held a middle-management position in student welfare for almost half my career, and was certified in Mental Health First Aid, and SafeTalk, amongst many other professional development opportunities over the years, and have also completed trauma-informed yoga teacher trainings. Wellbeing and mental health is a passion of mine especially when I can offer some support to others at times that may be challenging.

Since teaching yoga I have been drawn to the inclusion of sound meditation in my classes, especially Yin. As a music teacher it was a fairly organic addition. Always seeking to learn, I studied the ancient traditions behind sound as a healing tool, as well as modern science that is further verifying it as a healing modality. Coupled with my already established knowledge of music, this has brought another layer to the experience of many class participants.

Creating a holistic, welcoming, and safe space for others to experience peace, relaxation, and healing, is a responsibility and a privilege. In the last few years, people seeking out Yin Yoga has dramatically increased. I hope to share with you, as teachers of yoga, the tools to confidently provide a trauma-informed Yin practice with conscious use of sound healing instruments.
